Quick tips to make your videos and photos stand out without needing a full production crew.
Creating content has never been easier... but creating good content? That still takes a little know-how.
The good news is that you don’t need a studio, a massive budget, or a Hollywood camera setup to make a big difference. Just a few small tweaks can take your content from “that’ll do” to “wow, that looks great.”
Here are seven simple ways to level up your next shoot whether you’re filming on your phone or a DSLR.
1. Shoot at the Highest Resolution You Can
If your camera or phone lets you shoot in 4K, do it. Even if you don’t plan to export in 4K, the extra detail gives you more flexibility when editing. You can crop, reframe, or punch in without losing quality.
Also think about how your content will be viewed.
Vertical is best for social media.
Horizontal works for websites or YouTube.
If you’re unsure, shoot horizontally at 4K or above. That way you’ll have enough resolution to crop and reframe into vertical later without losing quality.
Your future self in the edit suite will thank you.
2. Understand Frame Rates (and When to Use Them)
Frame rate simply means how many still images (frames) make up one second of your video.
25fps is standard in the UK. It looks natural and cinematic.
30fps is common in the US.
50fps or 60fps is great if you want to slow your footage down later.
If you want smooth slow motion, double your frame rate. So if you’re editing on a 25fps timeline, shoot at 50fps for up to half-speed slow motion.
You probably don’t need 100 or 120fps unless you’re filming dramatic product pours or, you know, a shampoo ad.
3. Work the Light
Light can make or break your content. A well-lit shot looks professional, polished, and intentional. A poorly lit one looks… well, like a Tuesday morning Zoom call.
Here’s how to work with what you’ve got:
Use natural window light whenever possible — it’s easier to understand than lighting gadgets.
The bigger the light source, the softer the light.
The closer you are to it, the harsher the shadows.
Step back for a smoother look.
For portraits or talking-head videos, try a Rembrandt lighting setup - one light at a 45-degree angle, slightly above eye level. It adds depth and a natural balance between light and shadow.
Think of light as your best friend. It can make you look amazing… or completely throw you under the bus.
4. Watch Your Background
Your background shouldn’t compete for attention. A simple, uncluttered backdrop helps the viewer focus on your subject (that’s you, by the way).
If you’re shooting in a workspace or studio, look for clean lines and colours that match your brand.
A good rule of thumb: if your background looks busier than your main subject, it’s probably too much.
5. Clean Audio is Everything
Great visuals won’t save bad sound. In fact, poor audio is one of the quickest ways to lose your audience.
If you’re recording voice, use an external mic whenever you can. Even affordable wireless or clip-on options make a massive difference.
Position the mic around 6 inches from the subject’s mouth.
Avoid echoey rooms. Soft furnishings like curtains or carpets help absorb reverb.
People will forgive slightly shaky footage. They won’t forgive you sounding like you’re trapped in a tin can.
6. Keep It Steady
Even the most creative shot can look unprofessional if it’s shaky. Use a tripod, a gimbal, or even a stack of books to keep your camera stable.
If you’re shooting handheld, use both hands and tuck your elbows in to reduce movement. If you want that natural movement to it, move from the hips not from the hands and arms.
7. Frame It Right
Composition helps tell your story before anyone hits play.
Start with the rule of thirds, turn on your camera's gridlines or imagine your frame divided into a 3x3 grid. Place your subject where the lines meet to create natural balance.
Keep your eye line level with the camera, and leave a little breathing space above your head.
Think of framing like punctuation, it helps your story make sense.
